How trademark registration works in Pakistan
Trademarks are governed by the Trade Marks Ordinance, 2001 and the Trade Marks Rules, 2004. Registration usually takes 12 to 18 months.
- Trademark search. We search the IPO-Pakistan records (or file Form TM-55) to check whether your name or logo conflicts with an existing mark, before you spend money on filing.
- Choose the right class. We identify the correct Nice classes for your goods or services. Pakistan requires a separate application for each class.
- File the application (Form TM-1). We prepare and file your application with IPO-Pakistan and send you the application number.
- Examination and objections. If the examiner raises an objection, we draft and file the written reply within the deadline.
- Publication and opposition. Your mark is published in the Trade Marks Journal. Anyone can oppose within two months, and we defend your application if they do.
- Registration certificate (Form TM-11). Once the mark is cleared, we pay the certificate fee and deliver your registration certificate.

Who registers trademarks in Pakistan?
The Intellectual Property Organisation of Pakistan (IPO-Pakistan) examines and registers trademarks under the Trade Marks Ordinance, 2001 and the Trade Marks Rules, 2004.
Does registering my company with SECP protect my brand name?
No. SECP registration protects your company name as a legal entity, not your brand. To get exclusive rights to a brand name or logo, you need to register it as a trademark with IPO-Pakistan.
How long does trademark registration take in Pakistan?
Typically 12 to 18 months from filing to certificate, and longer if the examiner raises objections or someone files an opposition.
How long does a registered trademark last?
Ten years from the application date. You can renew it for further ten-year periods, indefinitely.
Can I register one trademark for several products?
Pakistan uses a single-class system, so you file a separate application for each Nice class your goods or services fall into.
Can overseas Pakistanis or foreign companies register a trademark in Pakistan?
